New Creative Kindness Beret Kit
Flattering Alternatives for Anyone, for Any Reason
Beaver Dam WI—Of the 25,000 letters Nancy Zieman has received in response to her Sewing with Nancy® “Sew a Smile” series, the majority, by a 3:1 margin, were inquiries about making head coverings for hair-loss sufferers.
Their questions, such as “How do I make a cap, hat or turban?” or "Do you have any tips for organizing a group to make wig alternatives for our local cancer treatment center?” are addressed in the new book, Creative Kindness, by Nancy Zieman and co-author Gail Brown. But despite the patterns and instructions offered in the book, Zieman and Brown soon discovered that flattering, fashionable head coverings continue to be in short supply.
To help fill the growing need, Nancy’s Notions® is introducing the “Creative Kindness Beret Kit” designed by Gail Brown and offered in the new Fall/Winter Nancy’s Notions mail and online catalogs (available in late August 2001). The kit will include four different Polartec® fabrics, easy to make into a wardrobe of berets just right for staying in and going out. A Nancy’s Notions employee, also a cancer survivor, helped select the range of fleece weights and colors. Brown and Zieman drafted the dimensions for a range of sizes: children, teens, and adults. Although Brown designed this beret for hair-loss sufferers, she often wears one herself, as a fashion-right accessory or bad-hair day camouflage.
The authors demonstrate step by step construction of the beret on a Sewing with Nancy program also called “Creative Kindness” and featuring several other sew-for-charity projects (November 2001 uplink). A companion video of the program is available. Brown adds, “This is a great project for beginners, particularly when made of fleece, a fabric that forgives stitching and fitting inaccuracies.”
Well-known journalist Judy Heim, author of the Free Stuff on the Internet series (C & T Publishing), was frustrated by the lack of head-covering options. Then Brown sent her the Creative Kindness Beret.
“If you have ever lost hair to chemotherapy, alopecia, surgery or other illness, you know that not just any hat will do,” said Heim. “You want one that will stay on your head, comfortably, that will add fullness and color to your face...and that's fun to wear. Remarkably, this beret is all of these things, and you can sew one in less than an hour! I am thrilled with my new berets and my life is better because of them, I am convinced.”
The Creative Kindness Beret Kit, Nancy’s Notions item # CKBKT2, sells for $18.95 plus shipping. The 30 minute video, item # SN1510, sells for $12.95 plus shipping. To order, contact Nancy’s Notions, PO Box 683, Beaver Dam WI 53916-0683, 1-800-833-0690; or visit www.nancysnotions.com. Wholesale and group discount inquiries are invited.
With the Creative Kindness Beret Kit anyone, even beginners, can make a wardrobe of four hats someone will need and appreciate. The Kit includes instructions and four Polartec® fabrics selected by a Nancy’s Notions employee and cancer survivor. Sized for children, teens and adults, the beret can be accented with an optional, easy-to-make fabric flower.
|Creative Kindness: People and Projects Making a Difference began as a Sewing With Nancy® public television program called “Sew A Smile.” The response was so overwhelming that program host Nancy Zieman and co-author Gail Brown decided to put some of the many heartwarming stories and helping projects into a book and companion video. The 96-page hard cover book contains inspiring stories of people who use their sewing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting skills to help others. The book also includes instructions for 12 projects anyone can make. In the 30-minute video, Nancy and Gail share even more stories and projects. A portion of the profits from the book are donated to various charities on a quarterly revolving basis. The Creative Kindness book is $14.95 plus shipping; video is $12.95 plus shipping.|
